Chip Talk > Renesas Steps into the AI Sphere with RZ/G3E Launch
Published July 29, 2025
The semiconductor world is buzzing with excitement as Renesas steps up its game with the introduction of the 64-bit RZ/G3E microprocessor (MPU). This launch represents a significant leap in the company’s efforts to integrate AI acceleration and edge computing into its product line, addressing the growing demand for high-performance Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications.
Renesas, a renowned player in the market, has designed the RZ/G3E to cater to the industrial and consumer sectors. These sectors include factory equipment, medical monitors, and retail terminals, all requiring robust computing power alongside AI capabilities for efficient processing.

At the heart of this powerful new MPU is a quad-core Arm Cortex-A55, coupled with a Cortex-M33 core and an Ethos-U55 NPU specialized for AI tasks. This combination ensures that AI applications like image and voice recognition are processed with minimal CPU load, enhancing efficiency.
For the uninitiated, the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is specifically designed to handle AI workloads. By incorporating an NPU, Renesas has improved the MPU's ability to manage tasks that require intensive computation, such as real-time image classification and voice-triggered operations.
The RZ/G3E MPU is particularly suited for HMI applications due to its capability of managing dual Full HD displays at 60fps. It supports a wide array of interfaces, including LVDS, MIPI-DSI, and parallel RGB, alongside a MIPI-CSI for video inputs. Such versatility makes it an ideal choice for a myriad of applications that necessitate high-quality video and multimedia processing.
Moreover, connectivity is a tempting highlight, with PCIe 3.0, USB 3.2 Gen2, and dual-channel Gigabit Ethernet transforming this MPU into a versatile hub for fast, reliable communication.
One of the significant advantages of Renesas’ new MPU is its Linux support. Developers are provided with a Verified Linux Package and an option to use Linux BSP Plus for the latest kernel updates. This extensive support system, including options for Ubuntu and Debian, ensures developers can deploy and scale their projects with minimal friction.
In tandem with its own offerings, Renesas is encouraging development with its system-on-module (SoM) solutions, available through partnerships with Tria, ARIES Embedded, and MXT. These solutions provide ready-to-use hardware platforms, reducing time-to-market for new products.
Renesas’ strategy involves combining the RZ/G3E with other compatible devices in what it calls “Winning Combinations.” These are pre-validated system architectures that enhance design efficiency for faster project completion.
The introduction of the RZ/G3E MPU is a testament to Renesas' commitment to pushing the envelope in AI and edge computing. With features that cater to a wide array of HMI applications and extensive developer support, this chip stands to set a new benchmark in the MPU market.
