Chip Talk > Lumentum's Innovations Pushing the Boundaries of Optical Networking
Published September 29, 2025
Lumentum Holdings Inc., renowned for its contributions to optical and photonic products, recently presented a series of live demonstrations at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC 2025). With an emphasis on enhancing AI-driven data centers and expansive communication networks, Lumentum showcased innovations that promise to redefine scalability and efficiency in optical networking.
One of the key highlights from Lumentum's booth was its development of external laser source (ELS) modules in the ELSFP pluggable form factor. This advancement targets co-packaged optics (CPO) architectures, facilitating high bandwidth in hyperscale data centers and AI clusters. Traditionally, the laser source and optical engine were contained together, but by repositioning the laser source to the system faceplate, Lumentum improves thermal management and increases serviceability. This modular design not only boosts density and reduces thermal loads but also assures longer performance life. Lumentum anticipates these modules will be available for sampling in early 2026. More on this can be found in Semiconductor Today.
Lumentum's demo also included the debut of its 1.6T DR8 TRO OSFP transceiver module, tailored for hyperscale cloud and AI applications. This module promises data connectivity of 8x200Gbps over 500 meters of single-mode fiber optics, optimizing efficiency with lower power dissipation. It leverages Lumentum's internal manufacturing and currently readies for volume production. Its TRO (Transmit-Retimed Optical) design stands out for minimizing the energy footprint in cloud infrastructures.
Addressing the need for greater spectral coverage, Lumentum introduced its extended C+L ultrawideband Nano-iTLA, built on narrow-linewidth InP technology. Covering over 12.4THz, this innovation supports AI data centers, interconnects, and long-haul networks. This Nano-iTLA leverages Lumentum’s proven external cavity laser technology, ensuring top-tier signal integrity and reach. Crucially, it maintains the compactness of earlier models while offering unprecedented tunability.
The relentless pace of AI and cloud workloads underscore the necessity for sophisticated optical solutions. As Rafik Ward, Lumentum's chief strategy & marketing officer, emphasized, these innovations position the company at the forefront of shaping tomorrow’s network infrastructures, solidifying its role as a key enabler in AI networks. In conclusion, Lumentum's demonstrations at ECOC 2025 signal a promising leap in optical networking technology, with their innovations geared towards minimizing latency, optimizing performance, and radically improving the scalability of tomorrow’s data centers.
