Chip Talk > Building Bridges: Qualcomm and Taiwan ODMs Elevate AI PC Game
Published May 20, 2025
In the ever-evolving landscape of semiconductors and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Qualcomm stands out by further intertwining its already significant partnerships with Taiwan's technological powerhouses. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has illuminated a future steeped in enhanced collaboration, especially with giants like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
During a recent media session in Taipei, Amon reiterated Qualcomm’s longstanding alliance with TSMC as one of its largest fabless semiconductor designers. This relationship is pivotal as Qualcomm expands its footprint in the AI sector. "Historically we’ve always been a very big customer of TSMC, and we continue to be," Amon stated, emphasizing how these collaborations will bolster Qualcomm’s AI endeavors.
Taiwan plays a vital role in Qualcomm’s strategic blueprint, particularly through its Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) partnerships. With ODMs like Quanta Computer Inc and Compal Electronics Inc leading the way globally, Qualcomm is strategically placed to harness Taiwanese prowess in both PC ecosystems and cutting-edge AI technologies.
At the heart of this AI surge is Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series, which is spearheading a new era of AI-powered personal computers. As noted in his keynote, Amon sees these processors redefining Windows PCs' performance thresholds. Such innovation is reflected in the Snapdragon X series, where AI acceleration meets enhanced processing prowess, setting new standards in the tech industry.
Following a series of retail launches, these AI-enhanced laptops have seen quick adoption, securing about 9% of the US market share and a significant position in Europe. “As new players entered the PC market, sometimes it took seven to nine years to get to about 10 percent market share,” Amon highlighted, showcasing the rapid acceptance of the Snapdragon X series.
Qualcomm's ongoing endeavor to capture more of the AI PC market signifies a broader industry trend: the merging of AI capabilities with conventional computing to create supercharged, intelligent devices. By continuing its collaboration with TSMC and leveraging its relationship with Taiwanese ODMs, Qualcomm not only enhances its product offerings but also secures a firmer grip on the AI landscape.
These partnerships underscore a larger narrative — the increasing convergence of global semiconductor players with Taiwanese technology leaders. Through dynamic collaborations and innovation-led strategies, companies like Qualcomm can navigate the complexities of AI and semiconductor design, turning challenges into opportunities.
